Plesk windows cannot add domain or update dns zone after last windows update

Symptoms

MSDNS is used as DNS server. Every time when you try to update domain hosting or DNS settings of the domain, Parallels Plesk Panel hangs. Sometimes it can fails with the following error:
Failed domain creation: Unable to update domain data: Unable to create dnsmng object: dnsmng failed: Empty error message from utility

The following message can be found in event viewer:
Faulting application DNSMng.exe, version 9.501.0.0, time stamp 0x4bc1f9fd, faulting module MsProv.dll, version 9.501.0.0, time stamp 0x4bc205bc, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x000600bb, process id 0x56c, application start time 0x01cae1ae46c559db

Utility “%plesk_bin%\dnsmng.exe” cannot be run from command line. It fails with the error:
DNSMng.exe – Application Error : The instruction at “0x00ba74ac” referenced memory at “0x00bd2108″. The memory could not be “read”

Resolution

This problem was discovered in Parallels Plesk Panel . Issue is caused by installed MS update KB976576. It updates libraries which are used by MSDNS.

Hotfix can be applied on Parallels Plesk Panel versions 8.6, 9.0-9.3 and 9.5

Before applying the fix you need to install the latest Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package ATL Security Update vcredist_x86.exe from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=766a6af7-ec73-40ff-b072-9112bab119c2&displaylang=en

and backup the original file.

Fix for Parallels Plesk Panel version8.6:
Replace the file “%plesk_bin%\MsProv.dll” with the file MsPRov.dll from the attachment.

Fix for Parallels Plesk Panel version 9.0-9.3:
Replace the file “%plesk_bin%\MsProv.dll” with the file MsPRov.dll from the attachment.

Fix for Parallels Plesk Panel version 9.5:
Replace the file “%plesk_bin%\MsProv.dll” with the file MsPRov.dll from the attachment.

Once it is done, check if you can perform operations with domains and manage DNS records.

Additional information

%plesk_bin% is environment variable which points to Paralles Plesk binaries folder. Usually it is C:\Program files\Parallels\Plesk\admin\bin

Plesk windows file manager need to upload larger files

By default a client can’t upload files in plesk file manager larger then ~30MB . Unfortunately we have to let them upload bigger files because they like to use the archive “uncompress” feature from file manager.

The error received in plesk is:

HTTP Error 404.13 – Not Found

The request filtering module is configured to deny a request that exceeds the request content length.

All you have to do to solve this :

%windir%\system32\inetsrv\appcmd set config “PleskControlPanel/” -section:requestFiltering -requestLimits.maxAllowedContentLength:104857600

which will set a 100MB limit for file uploads in plesk file manager.

Bypass the check for pre-release upgrade windows 7

My windows 7 beta was expired so I searched for a solution to “repair” it. Bellow is what I have found. It took some time to upgrade (about 1 hour) but worked flawless for me. no data loss , but just to be sure make a backup of your important data first

Here’s what you can do to bypass the check for pre-release upgrade IF YOU REALLY REALLY NEED TO:

Download the ISO as you did previously and burn the ISO to a DVD.
Copy the whole image to a storage location you wish to run the upgrade from (a bootable flash drive or a directory on any partition on the machine running the pre-release build).
Browse to the sources directory.
Open the file cversion.ini in a text editor like Notepad.
Modify the MinClient build number to a value lower than the down-level build. For example, change 7100 to 7000 (pictured below).
Save the file in place with the same name.
Run setup like you would normally from this modified copy of the image and the version check will be bypassed.

These same steps will be required as we transition from the RC milestone to the RTM milestone.

Plesk windows webmail 503 error

It happened that webmail from plesk windows just opened a page with error 503 , service unavailable. In our case it was horde webmail with plesk 8.6 IIS7 on windows 2008. Restarting whole IIS did not help.

Unfortunately I did not find too many docs related to it so find out from Parallels that webmail is not running from “webmail” application pool but on plesk default application pool that can be found in plesk -> server-> IIS Application Pool . If this is not running so webmail will not work and you have to restart this application pool to start webmail.

Install pear in plesk windows

To configure PEAR bundled with PHP the following steps need to be completed:

1. Launch command prompt.

2. CD “%plesk_dir%Additional\Php\”.

Note: The folder can be different – e.g. in case of using PHP5.

3. Execute go-pear.bat and follow the on-screen instructions.

4. Add the path to the newly created pear.bat file into the PATH system variable after installation and reboot the machine for changes to take effect.

These actions will install the ‘pear’ command on your server including basic pear packages. You can use ‘pear’ command from the Windows command prompt to manage PEAR packages.
